This time of year is extra special thanks to the return of old traditions and the introduction of new ones. Though traditions change from family to family, it’s always fun to discover new activities to try—that’s why we asked everyone in the Dia&Co National Community Facebook group to share their favorites for a little inspiration.
Here are just a few of the answers that warmed our hearts like chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Keep reading for new ideas to throw into your holiday mix! Answers have been edited and condensed for clarity and length.

“On Christmas, my family and I sing through my grandpa’s old carol books. He was a music teacher and singing all together always gets me in the holiday spirit!”
Emily D.

“My favorite holiday tradition starts December 1st. I purchase 25 books and wrap each one of them. Every day, we unwrap and read a new book. We all get in our cozy PJs next to the fire, have our cups of hot chocolate with mini marshmallows, and spend a few hours together as a family. No TV, no cell phones. It’s my favorite time of year.”
Ashley M.

“Instead of a gift exchange, [my adult siblings and I] take turns selecting a charity and we all donate what we would have spent on a gift. We talk with our kids about the work the charity does and why it’s important to make philanthropy a special part of our holiday celebrations.”
Karen C.

“Cookie baking and candy making with my littles; homemade pizza, popcorn, and movies on Christmas Eve; driving around to look at lights; and building and decorating a gingerbread house together and eating it on Christmas day.”
Kristin F.

“I love decorating the tree while drinking hot cider. There is something so fun about a hot beverage while you decorate!”
Sara B.

“My family plays ‘Dirty Santa’ (white elephant gift exchange). It gets outrageous with strategy and who’s lucky enough to get the last pick. It can go on for over an hour!”
Kelly H.
